When Schuco released the Lamborghini Countach LP500S in black on a 1/18 scale, I didn’t jump into buying it, I already have on 1/18 scale Lamborghini model from Schuco in my collection, the massive tractor, and I wasn’t too impressed with that one, so I initially skipped their black Countach model, I am already perfectly happy with my black Countach LP500 S from AUTOart and Kyosho, so I really didn’t need another black Countach, especially a sealed one.

However, I recently came across this blue metallic Lamborghini Countach S, or LP400 S, listed online, another one from Schuco, in 1/18 scale. This configuration, with gold-painted Bravo-style wheels and protruding five-hole dial rims, just captured my eye. With a nice discount on the original price, I couldn’t resist and added it to the collection.

This time, when it arrived, I was really pleasantly surprised. The model looked good, but the box looked even better. This model came inside a white cardboard box with a cutout on the side showing the model, which comes on a plinth with a display case on top, all protected by black rubber spacers during transportation. The white box actually flips open on the front and top, held in place by magnets, so no fidling around with a top cover or anything like that. Schuco really made an effort in the design of this packaging.

After photographing the model and really taking a close look at it, I have to admit it is a rather nice effort from Schuco, I really like the color with those gold wheels, the dashboard is blue, but it looks like the seats are just black, it would have been nice to see blue seats too, but you can’t win them all.

The dashboard cluster looks nice and detailed, it has the later style dials, not the Stewart Warner ones from the very first Countach LP400S models, but this still is what is known as a ‘low-body’ Lamborghini Countach S Series 1 version, there were actually three series of Countach S, the Series 1 are low body cars, 50 units built between 1978 and 1979, chassis 112.1102 to 112.1100, and they come with the Bravo style wheels, which is exactly what this specific Schuco model represents.

Let’s get one thing clear here: this is a nice model, but not a great one, it’s nothing like the classic AUTOart Lamborghini Countach LP500S, nor is it anywhere near the IDEA ones I have in my collection. Those latter ones are masterpieces, but this Schuco is also about half the price of those, and both are sealed resin anyway, nothing opens.

So I’m quite happy with this new addition, but there is one big issue with it for me, I know it might be nitpicking, but I sometimes wonder how these models get through the approval process at Automobili Lamborghini SpA, does nobody actually care about these models? Take a closer look at the rear of this blue Lamborghini Countach S:

Yes, you are seeing it right ... there is a ‘5000’ badge on the rear panel, on a Countach LP400S, that’s totally insane. True, the Countach LP500S came with a 5000 badge to depict the fact there was a 5-Liter V12 engine in this supercar, but the LP400S just had the stylish ‘S’ on that panel, no 400 or 4000, and certainly not a 5000 script, the Countach S came with the 4-Liter V12, so that’s a serious mistake from Schuco on this otherwise very decent model.
