When AUTOart announced they were going to do a new release on the Lamborghini Diablo GTR on a 1/18 scale, I wasn’t too impressed, they’ve made a really nice diecast version many years ago, and unlike some of their Murciélago and Aventador models that have become insanely expensive, the original Diablo GTR is still being listed on second-hand websites for very reasonable money.
However, you must be cautious with the first release, particularly items 74521 and 74522, the original AUTOart Lamborghini Diablo GTR in yellow and black, respectively. The initial release came with the wrong side sills. AUTOart corrected their mistake with a second production run of the yellow and the black Diablo GTR, but they’ve kept the same item number, so make sure you ‘see’ the model before you buy.
I think item 74523 was released later on; the orange version of the AUTOart Lamborghini Diablo GTR came with the correct side sills from the start. So when AUTOart announced a new release for this Lamborghini race car, I was a bit underwhelmed, especially as they listed yellow, orange, and black again ... why bother releasing exactly the same colors again years later?
But it seems I shouldn’t have been worried, AUTOart also listed two new colors, an Impact White and Blu Monterey, two really nice colors, I’ve already written an in-dept review of AUTOart item 79136, the Lamborghini Diablo GTR in Impact White, in late November, so make sure to take a look at it, but now I get to the Blu Monterey release, item 79135, and while a real Lamborghini Diablo GTR exists in this color, but it comes with a story.
The Lamborghini Diablo GTR was introduced back in 2000, and in total, only 30 units would be built to compete in the 2001 Lamborghini Supertrophy series. Chassis ZA9EAGTR0YLA12560 would be delivered to Lease Plan in France on February 21, 2001, subsequently it would be leased out to MMC Cars Michel Mhitarian and Keuelian Motors. From the factory, this car was finished in Giallo Evros, but it would later be repainted in a stunning Blu Monterey.
And that’s the car AUTOart now replicated on a 1/18 scale, and I have to admit they did an amazing job, the deep blue metallic paint looks amazing, and comes with a hue of purple from some angles, very nicely done, also the metallic flake isn’t too large for a scale model, something I tend to see on some other makes unfortunately.
So for me personally, both new colors from AUTOart, Impact White and this Blu Monterey are must-haves in my opinion, even if you already own one or more of the original Lamborghini Diablo GTR from AUTOart, this new release should also get a place in your collection, but that’s just my opinion.
