When Lamborghini unveiled the Diablo GT at the 1999 Geneva Auto Show, it was already a hardcore machine. But later that year, at the Bologna Motor Show, the brand revealed something even more extreme: the Diablo GTR, a purpose-built race car designed exclusively for the Lamborghini Supertrophy.

Limited to just 30 units, the Diablo GTR was never meant for the road. It was the true successor to the Diablo SVR and pushed Lamborghini’s one-make racing series to a new level. Power came from a 6.0-liter V12 producing 590 bhp, 50 bhp more than the SVR, good for a staggering 348 km/h top speed.

Built around a fully reinforced race chassis with an integrated roll cage, the GTR featured massive Brembo racing brakes, a huge rear wing mounted directly to the chassis, and lightweight 18-inch magnesium center-lock Speedline wheels. Extensive use of carbon fiber kept weight in check, while racing slicks and revised suspension geometry ensured maximum grip on track.

Inside, comfort was sacrificed for performance. The cabin was stripped bare, featuring a single carbon-fiber MOMO bucket seat with a six-point harness, racing switches, a fire-suppression system, and Plexiglas side windows. Even sound insulation was removed, making the GTR a raw, visceral driving experience.

The Lamborghini Diablo GTR by AUTOart

Priced at $310,000 when new, the Lamborghini Diablo GTR remains one of the most extreme and exclusive Diablos ever built, a no-compromise V12 supercar created solely for the racetrack, note that the presentation show car, and the car used in the official factory press release was finished in yellow, or Superfly Yellow as Lamborghini called it, and that is the exact shade AUTOart went with for this new 2025 release of their Diablo GTR.

Comparing the older AUTOart release with this new one, the first thing you’ll notice is the weight, the old release was a metal model, this new one is a composite of course, and the wheight difference in really noticable, if you receive the box you might question yourself if there’s even a model inside, but that’s just the way things are these days from AUTOart, and if we’re really honest about it, the new composite models are showing crispier bodyline and finer details, you’ll just have to ignore the lightweight first impression.

Comparing both the older one and this new one side by side quickly shows the new model is a slightly different hue of yellow, and there are decals on the front left fender missing, around the ‘kill switch’ for instance, and for me personally, the interior of the new model is a lot nicer compared to the old models, especially the seat and the seat belts, the only thing that is less impressive on the new models is the carbon fiber airbox on top of the engine, but other than that, this new release is the better one to get if you are still looking to add a Diablo GTR to your collection.
