The story of the Lamborghini 3500 GTZ is a rather special one, for decades people believed just a single prototype was ever built by Zagato on a 10cm shortened Lamborghini 350 GT chassis, but later production records from the famous design house at Via Arese in Milan, Italy, mentioned two chassis, 0310 and 0322.
It is believed chassis 0322 was fitted to a silver metallic over black Lamborghini 3500 GTZ, but it was sadly destroyed in an accident, while chassis 0310 had a completely different life, unveiled for the first time to the general public during a late 1965 London Motor Show, but not on the Lamborghini stand, instead it was shown at the British Zagata Ltd. stand, and very few people noticed it.
Chassis 0310 was sold after its run at the shows, Marchese Gerino Gerini bought it, Lamborghini’s agent in Milan, the price during the 1965 London show was £6,100 (about US$ 17,000 while the Lamborghini 350 GT came with an MSRP of 5,850,000 Lira, or $9,365 back in 1965), in the early Seventies the car was sold to Peter Bermann, who had it shipped to Australia, converted to RHD, and repainted her in red.
But that wasn’t the end of the story, in the late Nineties, a German collector returned the car to Europe, it had left Australia and was located in Oklahoma, the US, inside a museum, Hans-Peter had chassis 0310 shipped to the Netherlands for a complete restoration, using original drawings from Ercole Spada at Zagato, but he also managed to get a hold of original photos taken by a Lamborghini mechanic back in the Sixties.
Chassis 0310 was repainted white again, the engine was completely rebuilt in Germany, and the original black vinyl interior was replaced with a Moss Green leather upholstery, according to documentation. However, the car was sold again, this time by Scott Gauthier, who auctioned it for $375,000 in Frankfurt. He had it shipped to Arizona, where he undertook a complete restoration, repainting it white again and fitting grey leather upholstery and new wood trim.
I just had to put this Lamborghini 3500 GTZ next to the original Lamborghini GT it was based on, in this photo I used the Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 from KK Scale as a comparison because it is also in red, and in the end, if looking from the side, the 350 GT and the 400 GT 2+2 are not too different, apart from the luggage cover design.
So this release from Maxima shows the Lamborghini 3500 GTZ finished in red with RHD, just as it was driven for years in Australia by Peter Bermann, before it was returned to white in the Nineties, and while this car, in this color, no longer exists today, I just couldn’t resist adding it to the collection, together with the illustrious silver metallic one, and the white one, which is the only survivor at this time in history.
